Meet Adala Studio’s Founder, Sonya Murphy

Sonya Murphy Adala Studio

As a child, I just loved books and if I wasn’t reading, I was writing and illustrating stories at my huge desk that took up most of the space in my tiny 1960s bedroom. Reading, writing, drawing and stationery were my thing. My desk was filled with books, pens, notebooks and other paraphernalia. Not much has changed. I believe I was destined to work with words and images.

At the tender age of 15, I landed a job as an Apprentice Hand and Machine Compositor at The Adelaide Advertiser. At that time, the previously male-dominated industry was changing at a rapid pace with computers replacing hot metal machinery. I was the second female apprentice to be employed at the ‘Tiser, as it was affectionately known. My apprenticeship included training in mark-up (design), typesetting, layout, and proofreading. When I finished my apprenticeship I went on to work at a variety of printers, ad agencies and design service bureaus.

In 1987, I started my own business working from home. The business has evolved over the years. There have been a couple of re-brands, a shift interstate, and many technological changes to be navigated. The most exciting, I think, was the introduction of Apple computers. That was a game-changer for the industry. One thing never changed though, the standard of service I provided my clients.

In 2015, I began a BA in Professional Writing and Publishing. I’d always been a curious person who loved to learn and I fell into university learning with dedication. I went on to complete a Master of Creative Writing in 2022 and I’m now undertaking a Graduate Diploma of Communication (digital media and visual communication).

With more than 35 years in the industry, I can offer you the benefit of my professionalism and experience. Book a call or send me a message so we can chat about how I can help you with your graphic communication needs.
